Decades of Quality

The Land Cruiser has long been known as one of the Middle East’s best-loved vehicles.

Bolder, Lighter, Stronger

The new twin turbocharged 3.5 Litre, V6 engine provides class-leading driving performance.

What is a Twin Turbo?

Have you ever wondered how some engines, although not having the largest displacement, manage to deliver a significant amount of power? The hidden weapon is the twin-turbo system! Consider the engine to be on fire. Generally, the amount of fuel you can add to a fire to start a decent flame is limited. However, a turbocharger works similarly to a strong air blower, allowing you to supply additional oxygen. This results in greater power and proficiency from the same engine size.

Differentiation from Other Forced Induction Systems

While a twin-turbo uses two turbochargers, other systems, like twin charging, combine a turbocharger and a supercharger. Twincharging aims to eliminate turbo lag and provide a consistent power boost, but twin turbos are often preferred for their simplicity and effectiveness in top-tier applications. In the UAE, where high-performance vehicles are a common sight on the roads, the twin-turbo system is especially valued for its ability to deliver superior proficiency, making it ideal for both city driving and desert escapades.

How does a Twin Turbo Work?

Exhaust gases are used in a dual turbo system’s mechanism to spin the turbochargers. This is how it operates:

1.    Exhaust Gases: The engine produces exhaust gases that exit the combustion chamber.

2.    Turbocharger Operation: These gases target the turbochargers. The gases are divided between the two car turbos in a parallel configuration. As the engine speed increases, the gases pass through the smaller turbo in a sequential sequence before moving on to the bigger turbo.

3.    Air Compression: The turbine linked to the compressor wheel is spun by the exhaust gas energy obtained from the turbochargers. Prior to being sent to the engine’s intake manifold, this wheel pulls in and compresses air.

4.    Increased Air Intake: Because compressed air is denser than uncompressed air, there is more oxygen available for burning. This makes it possible to burn more fuel, which produces greater force.

Types of Twin Turbo Systems

Parallel Twin Turbo

When two turbochargers are arranged in parallel, they each control half of the engine’s airflow while operating simultaneously. This configuration is common in V-type engines, which have separate turbos for each row of cylinders. In the UAE, where vehicles are prevalent, this setup offers significant advantages. The key benefits are improved execution at varying engine speeds and balanced power delivery, making it ideal for navigating both the fast-paced highways of Dubai and the challenging terrains of the desert.

Toyota offers

Sequential Twin Turbo

A sequential twin-turbo system makes use of two turbochargers, each with a separate size and timing of operation. At low speeds, the smaller turbo decreases turbo lag and responds quickly, while the bigger turbo engages at higher speeds to deliver maximum power. This configuration maximizes precision and power delivery.

Series Twin Turbo

One turbocharger feeds into another in a series twin turbo car system, increasing the total pressure. When maximum power is needed, this configuration is more frequently utilized in commercial and industrial applications than in passenger cars.

Benefits of Twin Turbo

1.    Improved Engine Performance: More fuel and air may burn in a twin turbo, increasing capability as well as horsepower.

2.    Enhanced Power Output: They can produce torque levels that would require much larger naturally aspirated engines.

3.    Reduced Turbo Lag: Sequential twin turbos, in particular, help mitigate turbo lag, providing quick response and sustained power.

4.    Versatility: Spanning sports cars to SUVs like the Toyota Land Cruiser, twin turbos are suited for many different sorts of vehicles, and they can be customized to meet individual demands.

Applications of Twin Turbos

Sports Cars

Twin scroll turbos reign supreme in the world of sports cars, where outstanding handling is everything. By forcing more air into the engine, twin turbos propel these sleek machines from 0 to 60 mph in record times.  Imagine the exhilaration of feeling the car hug the curves with incredible agility, thanks to the potent responsiveness twin turbos provide.

SUV and Trucks

Twin turbos in SUVs and trucks give the torque and capacity needed to tackle big loads and difficult terrain. The twin-turbocharged engine of the Toyota, for example, makes it a particularly competitive off-road vehicle.

Luxury Vehicles

Luxury vehicles use twin turbos to bring a blend of functioning and refinement. The smooth acceleration aligns perfectly with the premium driving experience expected from luxury car brands.
